RICK MODESITTEMAIL COMMISHRICK@AOL.COMbiographical informationLife long resident of Parkersburg; Attended PHS, WVU-P; Served as Police Officer 1975 – 1997; Chief of Police 1994-1997; Twice elected WV House of Delegates; Twice served as Acting Mayor of Parkersburg; Served as County Commissioner 2000-2010; Former Chairman of Athletic Commission. Licensed Realtor; President Rick Modesitt & Associates.orISSUESwhat do you believe to be the most important issue facing Wood County Commission today? The looming fiscal crisis over the increasing jail bill is at a critical state. I believe my experience with conservative budgeting will be of value in managing this situation. Secondary is the heroin and elicit drug epidemic in our area. The two issues go hand in hand. A concentrated effort to rid our community of this problem is a must.are there any changes in state laws regarding country government that you feel would benefit Wood County? The manner in which prisoners are held by the state and billed to the counties must be reviewed. Some counties are going broke under this burden. Secondly, County Commissions should be given the same home rule rights as cities. Local officials tend to manage their communities better than dictated by Charleston. Finally, to provide additional substance abuse programs.what is the best way to attract new business to Wood County?Commissioners need to be salesmen for the County. We need to provide potential businesses an area where the quality of life is good; housing is reasonably price; infrastructure is available; a solid education system; so we can provide a well educated, stable, hard working work force. We must be prepared to market ourselves against other counties and other states.
BUSY DAY OUT ON THE TRAIL..FIRST, WENT TO WVU @ PARKERSBURG STUDENT GOVERNMENT MEET THE CANDIDATE FOR HOUSE AND SENATE CANDIDATES….BUT WANTED TO BE THERE AND MINGLE. GOOD JOB TO MR BELL AND OTHER STUDENTS FOR ORGANIZING THE EVENT. THE CANDIDATES DID A GOOD JOB. I HAD CHANCE TO MEET SOME NEW FOLKS……..THEN A RUSHED OVER TO UNITY PLACE HIGH RISE. THIS PLACE WAS ROCKIN TONIGHT WITH 8 PIECE BAND …AND THE ROOM WAS FULL. HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK ..BUT THE BIG BIG BIG BONUS FOR ME TONIGHT…WAS MEETING SOMEONE I HAD NEVER MET BEFORE ….I YOUNG LADY IN HER 80’S WHO WAS 5TH OR 6TH COUSIN ON MY FATHERS SIDE OF THE FAMILY…..SHE HAD LIVED IN ROANE COUNTY AND MOVED TO THE HIGH RISE SEVERAL YEARS AGO….ALSO GOT TO MEET HER DAUGHTER….VERY NICE FOLKS. Well, my hat is off to the Friends of Parkersburg Parks once again. They sponsored the first “TRUNK OR TREAT” at Southwood Park. I sponsored the coloring pages for the kids. I think they expected somewhere around 200 kids….WELL LOW AND BEHOLD …there must have been 2500 people there……they ran out of everything…pop corn..candy….food…..it was incredible …and everyone was so nice. Sherry Dugan was dressed up ….Mr Barber and Mr. MERCER running for City Council was working….Joe and Sharon Kuhl were handing out candy to the bitter end…John Reed brought food….I saw Mr. West who is a candidate there and handing out treats…..Tons of volunteers…The 911 Mobile Communication Center was on hand…..the nice new Parkersburg Fire Dept Tower Truck was on display. It was just a great evening. I want to thank ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS of the Friends of Parkersburg Parks for all they do!!
Was honored to work with the VFW Post 4464 on a special project with country singer
CRAIG MORGAN. At the end, the honor guard presented me with this bracelet. which
I will put with my “special keepsakes”. As a Commissioner, I always had the utmost
respect for our veterans. As Ken Merritt always state “ALL GAVE SOME….SOME GAVE
ALL”. If elected to the Commission, our veterans will have a friend they can count on.
Homeless yard sign (and its siblings) need temporary homes until November 9th. Pleasant personality, moderately attractive, quiet (will never interrupt or criticize you) and is exceptionally low maintenance (will not ask to borrow the car or money and is completely housebroken-although sometimes serves as a target for a dog relieving itself). No references required and anyone with a pulse will be accepted.
Attended the Wood County Fire Board Committee meeting last night at Judge Black Annex. As former County Commissioner, I always supported needs of the fire fighters and had great respect for them…..especially those who VOLUNTEER to be a volunteer fire fighter. While Commissioner I supported obtaining life insurance for each volunteer in the county….I supported increasing their funding to help with opperating costs. If elected to the commission again, I pledge support for the men and women who serve as fire fighters…God bless each of them!
I enjoyed attending the Meet the Candidates Public Forum at
Jackson County Community Building and was sponsored by the League of Women Voters. LWV always does a great job on candidate forums. The two hour event featured question and answers from candidates for Mayor (3); Candidates for City Recorder (2) and Candidates for City Council (15 I believe). Many of the folks running have been friends. Met some new people tonight. But must admit, the City of Vienna is VERY fortunate to have EXTREMELY CAPABLE candidates seeking office. To those who are running…Good Luck!
Had the pleasure to attend the 34th annual President’s Banquet at Ohio Valley University in Vienna Saturday night. When I last served as County Commission, we were instrumental in facilitating bonds that built the new housing facility. OVU has a rich tradition in the Mid Ohio Valley. Every time I go there….I leave feeling better than I did when I arrived. Very inspirational school. I look forward to working with the college again in the future if elected to the County Commission.
